CHOLESTEROL: WHY WE SHOULD CARE AND HOW TO KEEP IT IN CHECK
Everyone talks about cholesterol, but some only hear about it when the doctor starts giving “serious” warnings. Truth is, cholesterol is not all bad, it’s actually needed in your body. But too much of the wrong kind? That’s when trouble starts, especially for our hearts.
What is cholesterol anyway?
It’s this waxy fat in your blood that helps your body make cells, hormones, and even digest fat. Your liver makes some, and the rest comes from food. The problem comes when LDL (the “bad” one) goes up too high, it can clog your arteries. HDL (“good” cholesterol) is the one that actually cleans things up, so you want that level up.
Why cholesterol is a big deal
Heart problems are sneaky. You could feel fine, but your arteries are quietly getting clogged. With the lifestyle many of us lead- eating fast foods, sugar-packed drinks, little exercise, cholesterol issues are becoming more common. And yet, people rarely check their levels unless they’re feeling unwell.
Signs to watch out for
Unfortunately, high cholesterol usually doesn’t show symptoms. That’s why it’s called a silent killer just like high blood pressure.
Risk factors include eating too much fried or fatty food, little to no movement, smoking and high alcohol intake, family history of heart disease or being overweight
How to keep your cholesterol in check
Eat smart, eat local- Swap a plate of fries or nyama choma every day with a fist size ugali and greens, beans, or fish. Oats for breakfast also work wonders.
Move your body- Nairobi traffic may trap you in a car, but even walking to the matatu stop counts. Dance, jog, or play football on weekends.
Cut down on sugar and fried foods- Sodas, cakes, chips… we all love them, but they spike cholesterol and weight.
Check your levels- Go for a simple blood test; it’s better to know than guess.
Cholesterol is not the enemy. The enemy is ignoring it. Make small, real changes in your daily life. Swap that second fried mandazi for fruit. Walk instead of taking the boda boda for short trips. Over time, your heart will thank you.
Knowing your cholesterol levels can help you make lifestyle changes that protect your heart for years to come.
